How We Test Pre-Owned Devices
Testing that matches the device
Every pre-owned device is different, so our checks depend on the product type, model and available features. The aim is simple: identify obvious functional issues before a device is listed and clearly disclose relevant limitations we know about.
Phones and tablets
Depending on the model, checks can include display and touch response, cameras, microphones, speakers, charging, buttons, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular/network functions, biometric features and general software operation.
Laptops and Chromebooks
Depending on the device, checks can include display, keyboard, trackpad, charging, battery operation, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, speakers, microphone, webcam, ports, storage and general system operation.
Account and activation checks
Where relevant, we check that devices can be prepared for a new owner and are not left attached to an account or activation lock that would prevent normal setup. Some imported models may retain regional or carrier branding even when they are otherwise usable on supported networks.
Battery condition
Batteries are consumable components and naturally change with age and use. Where battery information is available, it forms part of our assessment, but battery runtime can still vary depending on device age, settings, applications and usage.
Cosmetic grading
Functional testing and cosmetic grading are separate. A device may work normally while showing marks from previous use. Our Device Condition & Grading Guide explains the general cosmetic categories used on SmartGear listings.
Final listing check
The individual product listing remains the most important source for that device. Model-specific notes, condition disclosures, included accessories and any known limitations should be reviewed before purchase.
