Samsung Galaxy A53 5G Just Landed — Here's Which Grade to Pick
We've just added a run of Samsung Galaxy A53 5G handsets to the shop, and because they're spread across a few different condition grades and price points, it's a good moment to explain how our grading works and help you pick the right one without overpaying.
Why the Galaxy A53 5G is worth a look
The A53 5G sits in that sweet spot of "still very capable, no longer priced like it." It runs a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED 120Hz display, a 5,000mAh battery that easily gets you through a full day, and a quad rear camera setup that's more than enough for everyday photos. Every unit we sell has been updated to Android 16, and being 5G means it's ready for New Zealand's current networks without any compromise. At $269 to $349 depending on grade, it's one of the more sensible ways into a modern Android phone right now.
What our grades actually mean
"Refurbished" can mean very different things depending on where you buy, so here's exactly what we check and how we sort devices into grades:
Fair — fully functional with visible cosmetic scratches or marks from previous use. Nothing that affects performance, but you'll notice the wear. This is the grade to choose if you want the lowest price and don't mind a phone that looks lived-in, especially if it's going straight into a case anyway. See the Fair grade A53 here.
Excellent — light wear only, nothing obvious unless you're looking closely. This is the grade most people end up choosing, since it's a noticeably tidier phone for a modest step up in price. Have a look at the Excellent grade A53.
As New — cosmetically close to a brand-new device, with no meaningful signs of prior use. If the idea of buying "used" makes you hesitate, this grade is usually the one that changes your mind. We also have an As New single-SIM A53 and an As New dual-SIM version if you run two numbers on one phone.
Regardless of grade, every phone we sell is checked for full functionality first — battery, charging, cameras, buttons, connectivity, all of it. Grade only ever describes cosmetic condition, never how well the phone works.
Which one should you actually buy?
If the phone is for a teenager, a spare device, or you're rough on phones generally, Fair is genuinely good value and you'll save the most money. If you want something that feels good to use day to day and don't want to think about it again, Excellent is the safest middle ground. If you like your gear looking sharp, or you're buying it as a gift, As New is worth the extra spend.
One thing worth knowing: with refurbished stock, quantities at each grade are limited and don't get restocked the same way new phones do — once a batch sells through, the next batch may land at slightly different pricing depending on what comes in.
