How We Grade Trade-In Devices at SmartGear NZ
How We Grade Trade-In Devices at SmartGear NZ
When you bring a phone, tablet, or laptop in for trade-in, you deserve to know exactly how we arrive at the number we offer. Here's the process, step by step.
1. Functional Diagnostic
Every device goes through a full functional check before anything else: screen and touch response, battery health, all cameras, speakers and microphone, charging port, buttons, and biometric sensors (Face ID, Touch ID, or fingerprint sensor depending on the device).
2. Cosmetic Grading
We assess the physical condition against a consistent set of grades — screen scratches, back glass or casing damage, and overall wear. This is what separates a fair trade-in process from a guess: the same device in the same condition should get the same grade every time, not a different number depending on who's behind the counter.
3. Security and Account Checks
We confirm the device isn't locked to a previous owner's account (iCloud, Google, or Samsung account), isn't reported lost or stolen, and has no outstanding finance owing. This protects you as much as it protects us — a device with a lock on it can't be resold, so it can't be traded in until it's cleared.
4. The Offer
Once the functional and cosmetic checks are done, we give you a firm number on the spot — not an estimate that changes later, and not a lowball opener you have to negotiate up from. What we quote is what you get.
5. Data Wipe
Every traded-in device is factory reset and fully wiped before it's resold, so none of your personal data carries over to the next owner.
Why We're Transparent About This
Trade-in shops don't always explain how they land on a number, which makes it hard to know if an offer is fair. We'd rather you understand the process and trust the outcome, whether you trade in today or decide to shop around first.
